When I was learning to footbrake on a longboard I watched multiple videos and all of them say to just put a foot on a ground. Good luck. I guess you will brake and break yourself a little.

So here how to actually do it.

It is about how it feels, not how it looks. Not only on a longboard. You can’t see yourself from the side. You need to memorize what you feel.

First. Balance. Learn to balance on a single foot while keeping the other one near the board.

Second. Slight touch. Learn to slightly touch the pavement while balancing.

Third. Variable pressure. Now after the balancing and the slight touch you’re ready to apply pressure on the braking foot.

I also recommend to learn mongo push or reverse stance and learn to brake with the other foot. This way it will wear your shoes more evenly, even out the fatigue and improve balance.
